The biggest impact technology in the Internet Age has had on our day to day lives has been in our use of time. You can find a nice local restaurant, buy concert tickets, pay bills, and listen to music any time you want, and all from devices small enough to fit into the palm of your hand wherever you go.
Social networking has even made it possible to have friends you never see or speak to. The downside, to at least this area of technological development, is that at times the communications that occur on these networks seem insincere or impersonal. Furthermore, it would be impractical to resume socializing in the ways we did in the past: by actually calling people and spending time with them.
Who can afford to budget that time out of their daily rituals of self-absorption? Who wants to go back to thinking of people as having actual lives outside of our activity feeds?
I propose a compromise! For your next event or special occasion, simply print this document and fill in the blanks, then insert it into a standard envelope (don’t forget postage!) and stick it in the mail (if you have any idea where these people live). Here’s to restoring that personal touch!
